Residents of Victory Park in Ruwa launched a drug and substance abuse awareness campaign on Saturday with the aim of educating the youths on the dangers of drug and substance abuse.

Veteran broadcaster Oscar Pambuka took the time to impart knowledge on the dangers of drug abuse to youths of Ruwa community.

Ward Councillors Joyce Chirowodza and Charles Humbato spearheaded the initiative and the event was also graced by Mayor Mike Mataruka.

Organising Chairman Godwin Nyarugwe thanked stakeholders for their unwavering support of the drug and substance abuse awareness campaign.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa this year launched the Zimbabwe Multi-Sectoral Drug and Substance Abuse Plan (2024-2030) which is expected to combat the scourge.

In his remarks during the launch the President said the scourge knows no bounds hence requires collective effort in fighting it.

Zimbabwe has been experiencing growing concerns about the impact of drug abuse on its youth and communities prompting President Mnangagwa to take a strong stance against illicit drug trade and this move is part of a broader effort to combat drug abuse and substance addiction in the country.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) also notes that substance abuse is a significant public health concern globally with 3.3 million deaths attributed to alcohol each year.
